In a sample of 1279 primary and secondary schools nationwide, students were polled about gang activity.

Overall, 7.6% of male and 3.8% of female secondary students reported that they had belonged to a gang in the last 12 months.

Students who are in gangs care less about school, do more drugs (such as marijuana), have delinquent peers, and feel unsafe or fearful in school. Principles were also polled in this study.

Schools with gang problems have a tendency to have more victimization, less safety, and poorer administrator leadership.
